Blast & Giveaway: Have No Shame by Melissa Foster

Book Synopsis:
The racially-charged prejudice of the deep South forces eighteen-year-old Alison Tillman to confront societal norms—and her own beliefs—when she discovers the body of a hate crime victim, and the specter of forbidden love turns her safe, comfortable world upside down.

Alison has called Forrest Town, Arkansas home for the past eighteen years. Her mother’s Blue Bonnet meetings, her father toiling night and day on the family farm, and the division of life between the whites and the blacks are all Alison knows. The winter of 1967, just a few months before marrying her high school sweetheart, Alison finds the body of a black man floating in the river, and she begins to view her existence with new perspective. The oppression and hate of the south, the ugliness she once was able to avert her eyes from, now demands her attention.

When a secretive friendship with a young black man takes an unexpected romantic turn, Alison is forced to choose between her predetermined future, and the dangerous path that her heart yearns for.

HAVE NO SHAME is an emotionally compelling coming of age novel featuring a young woman who cannot reconcile the life she wants with the one she’s been brought up to live.Have No Shame will resonate with anyone who has ever fallen in love, and those who have been forced to choose between what they know in their hearts to be true, and what others would like them to believe.

Review: Boundless by Cynthia Hand

Author: Cynthia Hand
Title: Boundless
Series: Unearthly #3
Publication: January 22, 2013
Publisher: HarperTeen
Source:Library
Synopsis
The past few years have held more surprises than part-angel Clara Gardner could ever have anticipated. Yet from the dizzying highs of first love, to the agonizing low of losing someone close to her, the one thing she can no longer deny is that she was never meant to live a normal life.

Since discovering the special role she plays among the other angel-bloods, Clara has been determined to protect Tucker Avery from the evil that follows her . . . even if it means breaking both their hearts. Leaving town seems like the best option, so she’s headed back to California - and so is Christian Prescott, the irresistible boy from the vision that started her on this journey in the first place.

As Clara makes her way in a world that is frighteningly new, she discovers that the fallen angel who attacked her is watching her every move. And he’s not the only one. . . . With the battle against the Black Wings looming, Clara knows she must finally fulfill her destiny. But it won’t come without sacrifices and betrayal.

In the riveting finale of the Unearthly series, Clara must decide her fate once and for all.

I loved the first book in this trilogy, liked the second and now harbor uncertainty about this one. Hand has fluidity to her writing that's inviting and doesn't disappoint in this book. This last installment ties up a few loose ends but there are several strands left dangling in the wind. Clara has been told since she learned of her heritage that her purpose is important and that not completing her task wouldn't be good. Only to get to this third book and have that seemingly make less sense and get thrown out the window. I felt emotionally set up to feel for one love interest only to be disappointed in the end and have him completely disappear from the conclusion of the book. My emotions were crushed because I'd grown fond of this particular boy and come to understand his true feelings for Clara, only to have her lead him on regardless of how much it hurt him. Love triangles seriously suck! Everything seems to focus around Clara in the end, her doubts about who she is and what she must do. Is she strong enough? That ending surprised me after experiencing Clara's emotional battles with herself. I found that we never get to know more about details about her brother and what exactly he was up to since book two. Overall, the writing is beautiful but the story execution falters in this installment for me and things just wrap up like a nice little Christmas bow....all neat and pretty. Though I'm over it now but initially this book left me distraught with many questions and no closure for some characters.

The Summer Prince by Alaya Dawn Johnson

Synopsis
A heart-stopping story of love, death, technology, and art set amid the tropics of a futuristic Brazil.

The lush city of Palmares Três shimmers with tech and tradition, with screaming gossip casters and practiced politicians. In the midst of this vibrant metropolis, June Costa creates art that’s sure to make her legendary. But her dreams of fame become something more when she meets Enki, the bold new Summer King. The whole city falls in love with him (including June’s best friend, Gil). But June sees more to Enki than amber eyes and a lethal samba. She sees a fellow artist.

Together, June and Enki will stage explosive, dramatic projects that Palmares Três will never forget. They will add fuel to a growing rebellion against the government’s strict limits on new tech. And June will fall deeply, unfortunately in love with Enki. Because like all Summer Kings before him, Enki is destined to die.

Pulsing with the beat of futuristic Brazil, burning with the passions of its characters, and overflowing with ideas, this fiery novel will leave you eager for more from Alaya Dawn Johnson.

Quote:“To love light, you have to love dark. I'm not trying to be profound, I know you'll understand. I don't mean that you have to hate to love, or that you have to die to live.I mean that sometimes, you turn out the lights just to turn them back on.”

I enjoyed the heart of this story, though admittedly it left me perplexed at the end. For one, the romance I couldn't truly grasp who loved who. I know that Gil and Enki love each other but I think they also love June possibly in two different ways. June in her own way is obsessed with Enki as she tries to support his choosing her friend Gil instead of her. June does have a connection with Enki that I couldn't completely decipher and caused some of my confusion about the love interests. It's not really a triangle as this society doesn't seem big on monogamous relationships and much freer in their choice of sexual encounters.

In a small way it made me think of the Hunger Games, I know people are always comparing many of the new dystopian novels to Collins' work but let me explain why I say this. In this world that Johnson has created each year a young male is chosen to be King and within the year of his reign, he will be sacrificed before the people of the city. Basically, they have a pageant type thing where the finalists get to show why they should be chosen for this prestigious role, developing a sort of fan base along the way with residents such as June cheering them on. This brings forth the question, why are they so desensitized to the fact that the one that gets chosen will be murdered publicly in order to solidify the choice of a new Queen. Alright, so it's explained somewhat in the book as to how this comes about and there is mention but not much explanation about some plague that the people of Palmares Tres seem to be able to avoid.

The characters June, Gil and Enki are okay. I couldn't entirely connect to Gil because I don't feel like I really know him other than he's June's best friend and Enki's consort. June is focused primarily on being the best artist in Palmares Tres and she says so repeatedly throughout the story. She's so wrapped up in being the center of attention and being famous that she becomes somewhat infuriating when people start dying and she's still trying to win the Queen's contest. Her interactions with Enki are my favorite scenes; she seems to take more risks and is willing to sometimes forget her lust for fame, when she's with him. I think her infatuation with his exotic beauty and prowess attribute to this. The story is told from June's perspective with letters from Enki that appear throughout the text, some of them give more details about who he is and what made him decide to enter for the Summer King position but the others left me puzzled. There are small gems in this work, that get lost in the overall execution with not enough details but I love the world building and the fluidity of the work. What this book accomplishes for me is it makes you think about what's important. Junes has to decide how many pieces of herself she's willing to lose in order to attain higher status?

Note: Contains sexual situations that some may be uncomfortable with their teen reading.

Cover Review: Beautiful! Love it.

Interview & Giveaway: Aberrant by Ruth Silver

Author Bio:
Ruth Silver attended Northern Illinois University and graduated with a Bachelor's in Communication in the spring of 2005.  While in college, she spent much of her free time writing with friends she met online and penning her first novel, Deuces are Wild, which she self-published in 2004.  Her favorite class was Creative Writing senior year where she often handed in assignments longer than the professor required because she loved to write and always wanted to finish her stories.  Her love of writing led her on an adventure in 2007 to Melbourne, Australia.  Silver enjoys reading, photography, traveling and most of all writing.  She loves dystopian and fantasy young adult stories.  Her latest novel published by Lazy Day Publishing, ABERRANT is scheduled for release April 13th.  Ruth has been actively writing since she was a teenager.  She currently resides in Plainfield, Illinois.

You can find Ruth by following her on Twitter | Facebook  | Website
Interview with Ruth Silver Author of Aberrant
What was your inspiration for Aberrant?
My inspiration for Aberrant was the fact that I loved reading Dystopian stories. I also love writing so I wanted to create a world, Cabal, that was unlike anything we've witnessed but not so far-fetched that it is purely science fiction.

What about Dystopian books appeals to you ?
I love the uncertainty and the setting. There's always a dramatic appeal with Dystopian novels. The hero/heroine is almost always in mortal danger. Sometimes a love story is mixed in it but it's not the basis of the story. Also with Dystopian books there's always the fact that it could happen, it could be real without being so incredibly far-fetched that it's pure fantasy.

Was it difficult deciding how to bring the characters to life?
Some of the characters came to me easier than other ones. Bad guys shouldn't always be purely evil. There has to be dimension to them. Trying to make a character that you want everyone to hate - but finding something redeemable is often a challenge.

What did you find to be the most difficult part of  bringing Aberrant to life?
Creating a Dystopian society where people might not want to leave.

What do you like to do in your spare time?
Aside from writing (and reading!) I also love photography. Oh and of course traveling! Though I don't get to travel as much as I'd like.

Who designed the cover art for Aberrant?
The eBook cover art of Aberrant was designed by the publisher, Lazy Day Publishing. There's a different cover for the paperback version and that one was designed by me!

Any other projects in the works?
Aberrant is a trilogy, so the next book in the series, Moirai, needs to be finished. I had originally drafted the first copy but with some significant changes in the editing process, there's a lot of rewriting to do!

I've also started a YA Fantasy, Orenda, which I will eventually get back to finishing once Moirai is with the editor and a YA Contemporary story that's still untitled and at the moment on the back burner.

Favorite Quote?
I love reading and one of the authors I admire is, John Green. The Fault In Our Stars is one of my favorite books, as is this quote from it "My thoughts are stars I cannot fathom into constellations."

What is a question that you wish interviewers would ask, and the answer to that question?
When can we expect to read the sequel?
The paperback edition will be available in 2014. The eBook will likely be released a few months sooner!

In the future dystopian society of Cabal, the government instills equality for all and offers its citizens the perfect system.  There is food, shelter and jobs for everyone.  The one requirement is to follow the rules without question, including the government's match in marriage and "The Day of the Chosen", a lottery that randomly selects families to conceive children as natural means hasn't existed in generations.  Following her eighteenth birthday, Olivia Parker accepts her requirement to marry her childhood best friend, Joshua Warren, and is eager to start her work assignment and new life when it all comes abruptly to an end as she's arrested and thrown in prison.  The only crime committed, her existence.  Olivia is unlike the rest of the world born not from "The Day of the Chosen."  The truth haunts the government and puts her life in grave danger as one simple fact would destroy the perfect system.

With Joshua's help, Olivia breaks free of prison and is forced on the run.  Together they set out to find the promised rebel town in search of a new home and new life together.  Their situation seems less than promising as they reach the town of Haven.  New rules and customs must be adhered to in order to stay.  Leaving would mean most certain death in the large expanse of the Gravelands.  Time is running out as the government mounts an attack to destroy Olivia and bury her secret with her.  Thrown into a world unlike their own, they must quickly adapt to survive.

Review: Spellbinding by Maya Gold

Synopsis
Salem is the bewitching backdrop to this lush, fast-paced tale of one girl discovering the source of her powers.

It is during a routine school project that Abby Silva--sixteen and nearly friendless--makes a startling discovery: She is descended from women who were accused of witchcraft back in 1600s Salem. And when Abby visits nearby Salem, strange, inexplicable events start to unfold. Objects move when she wills them to. Candles burst into sudden flame. And an ancient spellbook somehow winds up in her possession.

Trying to harness her newfound power, Abby concocts a love potion to win over her longtime crush--and exact revenge upon his cruel, bullying girlfriend. But old magic is not to be trifled with. Soon, Abby is thrust headlong into a world of hexes, secrets, and danger. And then there's Rem Anders, the beautiful, mysterious Salem boy who seems to know more about Abby than he first lets on.

A reckoning is coming, and Abby will have to make sense of her history--and her heart--before she can face the powerful truth.

Thoughts:  I was really excited to read this one; the cover is absolutely beautiful and is what initially drew me to this book. However, this wasn't as “spellbinding" as I had hoped. Abby has been on the outskirts of the popular crowd for a while, being virtually a ghost but completely aware of her surroundings. High school hasn’t been easy socially for her, now that her best friend has gone away and they no longer keep in touch. She isn’t completely friendless, she has one friend Rachel but other than that she is unnoticeable, until one class assignment leads to the discovery of her life.

Abby notices a gap in her family history, while working on a class project. Encouraged by her teacher to delve deeper for additional credit, she decides to conquer her fear of water by traveling to Salem for more information. Abby discovers her family’s secret; she’s a witch. What does she do with the magic she now possesses? She decides to do little dirty magic to get back at some of the people that have been mean to her, one person in particular, Megan Keith. Abby must open her eyes come to understand the desires of her heart and what she thinks wants. In addition to coping with her new powers and her crushes, Abby learns she is the key to exacting revenge on the people of Salem. No longer invisible, Abby must decide to do what’s right or succumb to the fire that seeks to destroy everything.

Okay, the pace of the story is fast but the plot just didn't feel all the way there for me. However, I would recommend this to teens that are reluctant to read because of its length, quick pace and the paranormal aspects in the story.

Guest Post & Giveaway: daynight by Megan Thomason

On Tour with Prism Book Tours

It's time to leave Earth and cross over to the other side... it's not as far away as you think!!

Guest Post: The Second Chance Institute (daynight’s dystopia)

True story: I have lots of recurring dreams about procrastination. You know the ones where you show up for your final and realize you skipped every class that semester? That’s what I’m feeling like today. I got my assignments when I signed up for the blog tour months ago and waited until the day of the final to get them done. I’ve been a little busy. I swear I didn’t mean to skip class ;).

Thankfully I got Brad Darcton, a member of the ruling Ten of the SCI to help me out. If this were a real test, instant fail and I’d probably be expelled. But no one said that I couldn’t bring a guest to my guest post so I’m going for it. I warn you to take what he says with a grain of salt. The guy’s a walking SCI propaganda poster.

Brad: You mean to say I’m a wealth of useful information.

Megan: If I were compiling a book of lies, then you’d be my go-to guy. Anyway, we’re supposed to be talking about daynight’s dystopia, not your usefulness so be quiet for a minute.

For those of you who have read daynight you’ve probably already had the same thoughts that my friends and family say out loud: What’s wrong with you? Where on Thera did you come up with the twisted stuff in daynight? (OK, maybe they say, where on earth, but you can tell where my mind is.) Imagine me chuckling and blushing since I feel like I held back.

To be continued @ Tressa's Wishful Endings

Meet The Second Chance Institute (SCI): Worldwide non-profit and do-gooder organization. Their motto: Because Everyone Deserves a Second Chance at Life(TM). Reality: hidden behind every kind act is a dark agenda designed to gain control and force societal and moral extremes. Currently, the SCI’s pushing Project Liberate, a program to woo the poor and downtrodden into their Clean Slate Complexes—where “everything is provided” from jobs to food, shelter, clothing, and education. Unfortunately, as with all things that sound too good to be true, there’s a catch…

Meet Alexa Knight. Feisty, tough and currently homeless in Los Angeles, Alexa agrees to help the SCI in return for medical care for her sick mother. When she starts to suspect there’s more to the SCI than meets the eye will she believe Adam—the boy who saved her life and the SCI’s biggest champion, or Joshua—the attractive enigma who sings about conspiracy theories and pretends to be someone he’s not?
